1John 5:2
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments.

Keeping commandments (accentuate the positive)
We abide in Jesus when we keep His commandments (Jn.15:7,10). God's commandments have always been about love (Gal.5:14).


Thou shalt have no other gods before me (eliminate the negative)
The old testament, "thou shalt not" commandments foreshadow the new covenant prohibitions concerning the "old man" with warnings about idolatry (Col.3:5-8).


Putting off the flesh is the first step in keeping God's commandments; it includes a healthy fear of God's chastisement for disobedience as well as faith that the work of Calvary affords victory over the power of the flesh (Gal.5:24).
